About Us

Hi! My name is Glen, and I’m the proud owner of Pets From Afar.

Pets From Afar is a website dedicated to axolotls. My very first pet amphibian was an axolotl, and to this day, I’m still fascinated by these amazing and adorable creatures.

Axolotls were first introduced to me by my daughter, Siri. Since then, both she and I have been fascinated by these cute and friendly salamanders. So fascinated, in fact, that we decided to start this blog all about them!

The axolotl is a type of salamander that originates from a small lake called Lake Xochimilco in faraway Mexico City. Mexico City is the capital of Mexico, a bustling Central American country.

Axolotls have captured the hearts and minds of a large number of exotic pet lovers.

Whilst their status as exotic pets has been rising, their numbers in the wild have sadly been dwindling. Indeed, intense urbanization and a deteriorating ecosystem have brought the species to the brink of extinction…

As a matter of fact, axolotls have become critically endangered in their natural habitats. It is believed that there are more axolotls now living in captivity than in the wild…

With this blog, our aim is two-fold.

First of all, we hope to raise awareness around the plight of the fantastic axolotl.

Secondly, we aim to provide axolotl owners with the information and resources Siri and I have found useful to better understand and care for axolotl pets.

On this site, you will find articles about axolotl habitats – both at home and in the wild; as well as information about their eating habits, behavior, unique biology, colorful morphs, and general facts. We hope these articles will help you provide the best care to your beloved pet.

Ultimately, we want as many people as possible to get involved in breeding and caring for axolotls in order to preserve the species – all whilst raising awareness around and contributing to – initiatives aimed at regenerating axolotl populations in their native habitat.

If you think we’ve missed something (which we definitely have – we’re not experts…), then please reach out and let us know. Similarly, if there’s a topic you’d like us to research and cover, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Finally, if you’d like us to share a snap of your pet axolotl, send it across! We would be glad to post it on our site and share it on our social media profiles!

Enjoy your visit!
